Team Brasil was super awesome when I emailed them about filling out our info sheets. They sent me 3 of their skaters answers to our questions!!!
I am super pumped about this.
LETS MEET Blockaway Bitch,Peryl Streep and Debbie Hatcher
Blockaway Bitch
Birthplace: Rio de Janeiro, RJ
Home team: Sugar Loathe Derby Girls
Position: Blocker and Pivot
When you first started derby, who was your derby Idol?
My first Derby Idol was probably Bonnie D. Stroir. I used to watch her videos before I started watching bouts at DNN, she seems very spontaneous, dedicated and focused.
How does it feel knowing you are going to be an idol for up coming skaters?
Hm, I don’t think I’m going to be anyone’s idol, that’s such a big responsibility!
What are your preferred skates and wheels?
I’ve been skating on the same pair of shitty skates since I first started. Never rode some Riedells or popular brands. I might get a pair of Wickeds before the World Cup, though. Regarding wheels, I’m really digging the Radar Ghosts.
What was your worst injury?
I’ve sprained both my wrists at different times, that’s about it.
What was the hardest thing for you to learn as a skater?
Stoping!
What is the best piece of advice you were ever given?
Always look towards the direction you’re trying to go. Given to me by the amazing Purr Anna.
How have you personally been preparing for Toronto?
I’ve been trying to make enough money to actually go! Getting there is the first and most important goal!
What was the first thing you did when you found out you made your nation’s team? I posted it on my Facebook!
What are you looking forward to the most about the roller derby world cup?
Meeting Roller Girls from all over the world!
How does it feel to know you’ll go down in history as skating in the first ever roller derby world cup?
It feels weird. I never thought I’d compete in an international sports event.
What skills where the hardest for you to learn/which skills took the longest?
I still haven’t figured out how to properly plow-stop! It’s fucking hard as hell.
What’s the most valuable tip you can offer those derby girls just starting out?
Invest on some good pads.
What do you hope to take away from participating in the world cup?
Amazing memories and new friends.
Peryl Streep
Birthplace: São Paulo, Brazil
Home team: Gray City Rebels
Position: Jammer
When you first started derby, who was your derby Idol?
I didn’t have any because I had never heard of derby before, I only knew about the skating and stuff, I had no idea it was so huge! How does it feel knowing you are going to be an idol for up coming skaters?
Well, I don’t know if I’m going to be an idol or not, but if I ever become one, I’ll aspire to be humble, because cocky people annoy me, and I don’t wanna be one of them. =P
What are your preferred skates and wheels?
Well, I’ve skated on R3s so far, and they work ok for me. I’ve tried on the Wicked and I loved it. I’m looking to buy the 195 boots. As to the wheels, I really dig Heartless Wheels and the Jukes (Gee, they’re so amazing!!)
What was your worst injury?
None so far, thank goddess. HAHA!
What was the hardest thing for you to learn as a skater?
I think the hardest thing for me to learn was (and still is) to booty block. It’s been my struggle and I’m contantly working on it.
What is the best piece of advice you were ever given?
STAY FUCKING LOW!
How have you personally been preparing for Toronto?
I’ve been changing my diet (no more Burger King and Mc Donalds for me!) and trying to work on my endurance. It’s something that goes away in the blink of an eye!
What was the first thing you did when you found out you made your nation’s team?
I yelled: “hell yeah I’m going to Canada to play roller derby!”, which, in Portuguese became: “Puta que pariu, que foda, vou pro Canadá jogar derby!”
What are you looking forward to the most about the roller derby world cup?
I’m looking forward to actually BEING there, at an event that is so big in the derby world. I think the first bout is what I’m looking forward the most. But I’m sure as soon as I step on the track I’ll think “this is it, no more anxiety, I’m here, we’re here!’
How does it feel to know you’ll go down in history as skating in the first ever roller derby world cup?
It feels awesome! I imagine 70 -year-old-me telling my friends I was in the first roller derby world cup and showing them that my team is in a card that has become vintage. haha!
What skills where the hardest for you to learn/which skills took the longest?
I’ll stick to the booty block. Always the booty block.
What’s the most valuable tip you can offer those derby girls just starting out?
Well, my tip is: don’t be afraid of falling and always push yourself to the limit, know your limit and work from it.
What do you hope to take away from participating in the world cup?
I hope to take away so much when it comes to learning from watching other teams, I’ll want to watch every single bout! I hope to take away a lot of things to teach my teammates and help make derby even better and more popular down South
Debbie Hatcher
Birthplace:Sao Paulo, Brazil
Home team: Sao Paulo, Brazil
Position:Blocker
When you first started derby, who was your derby Idol?
Bonnie D.Stroir
How does it feel knowing you are going to be an idol for up coming skaters?
I can’t say i’m going to be an Idol, but just to know that i’m going to be representing my home country is already life changing.
What are your preferred skates and wheels?
For now i’m loving my poison wheels and my Riedell skates. Can’t talk much about tho, as here in Brazil we don’t have any brands selling skates or wheels, so i didn’t have the opportunity to try most of them.
What was your worst injury?
Thank God just some bruises. My social life is suffering more than my legs.
What was the hardest thing for you to learn as a skater?
I think team playing is the hardest part. 25 girls in the same room is never easy.
What is the best piece of advice you were ever given?
” If you are better than yesterday, then you are successful”. Bonnie D told us that, and i love it!
How have you personally been preparing for Toronto?
Skating harder than ever! Paying more attention to my body and physical skills.I should probably start preparing for the cold weather too.
What was the first thing you did when you found out you made your nation’s team?Told my mum!
What are you looking forward to the most about the roller derby world cup?
Meeting derby girls from all over the country and learning the most i can get from them.
How does it feel to know you’ll go down in history as skating in the first ever roller derby world cup?
Pretty damn cool i guess. But also a challenge. You don’t wanna disappoint those history books…
What skills where the hardest for you to learn/which skills took the longest?
I think, actually, learning how to skate at all. Stand still and not fall on my ass while i’m wearing my skates was the worst part.
What’s the most valuable tip you can offer those derby girls just starting out?
Don’t give up! Cliché as it is. Give it as much as you can, but know your limits. Don’t rush your learning process. Don’t be afraid to fall and you’ll be alright. What do you hope to take away from participating in the world cup?
If i could, i would take it all back home. But probably, how every country’s personalities affect their derby games.

I know some people are bummed they can’t make it too the world cup.
But get your team mates together and have a skate cleaning/world cup party with DNN. (I love cleaning my bearing…might just be me.)
DNN announced that they are going to do full four day coverage of both tracks for this historical event!

Okay, I promise this is my last post for the day. Life has gotten in the way which has delayed some of my posting.
IN OTHER NEWS. Team Finland has agreed to send their skaters the questions we have been collecting to answer. Then we will post them here. This is like an international skater meet and greet.
If you are on an international team and would like to answer our question sheet, shoot us a message! Get your team mates involved! It seems like a shame that we don’t know more about each others teams.
Also if you still have any questions for the international teams let us know.
What would you ask a world cup skater?

The gravity of the situation has started to dawn on me now that I realised our team’s airfares alone will cost $40 000. So…yeah. If we can get our donation page to pay for our accommodation, it would probably be the greatest thing in the world.
End infomercial.
